Biography

I have two 1-year-old quails, a male and female. They are Tibetan colored, I believe.

We hatched and handled them from the start but they still don’t like to be handled. They had been in a large outside enclosure with other quail but neighborhood kids would vandalize their home and abuse them so I am rehoming the survivors to a safer home. These two were the least social to humans and that’s probably what made them the survivors.

Quails can be indoor pets, but I think these guys would enjoy being back outside with more space. It is what they are used to and it’s the main reason why I have to rehome them. I thought they could just stay inside but they aren’t as happy. They are flighty, so a secure enclosure is needed.

The girl should lay eggs about every other day if she’s happy and getting enough sunlight.

The male has a very weak crow and only crows when he’s away from his girl. For the longest time I thought he was female because I had never heard him crow until I had to bring him inside temporarily. They’ve been a little stressed having to be in a smaller cage inside so the female has some feathers missing from her head, though that often happens when males mate with females.

They are extremely winter hardy, mainly just need to be protected from the rain/wind. Picture shows their previous enclosure. We also rehomed the chickens. If you have chickens, you might need to keep them separate from the quail unless you have extremely nice chickens. Ours were not and we had to build separate enclosures for the quails and chickens.
