Ruby is a six year old, 75lb pure bred Labrador Retriever that was given to me in 2021. She’s very playful and has lots of energy, but also knows when it’s time to relax, especially indoors, but also outside while I’m woodworking or doing handy work.

She gets along great with her “brother” Ozzie, a pure bred German Shepherd, when I visit family in Oklahoma.

Ruby loves the water and follows me on the surf when I take her fishing at the beach.

She knows basic commands but sometimes tries to outsmart me. She’s always wanting to jump in my car when I open the door, although when I travel to doctor’s appointments I can’t take her with me so she stays in my fenced-in yard.

When she’s not out in the yard walking around and sniffing things, she lays on the deck and takes long naps. (I have a security camera.) When other dogs (fellow neighbors) approach our lot, Ruby will stand on guard and will not take her eyes off them until they pass by and are out of sight.

She does the same thing and goes into protection mode when we’re at the beach and people approach while walking their pets. She hardly ever barks at others, unless it’s dogs barking near our fence.

She lets me know when she wants to go outside by barking once, gently, and if she doesn’t hear me coming she’ll increase her bark. But she only barks once at a time.
