Merlin is a fun-loving affectionate male English Lab. He is high-energy, two years old, AKC registered, and intact. He is seeking a new home with experienced dog owners who are able to give him lots of attention and exercise.
Merlin’s two favourite times are snack time and play time. He would happily walk for hours and would love a yard to explore. He is 100lbs of muscle and doesn’t always know his own strength, so he shouldn’t be around small pets or children (even if he thinks otherwise.) When he is done playing, he loves to snuggle on the couch and will happily decide that all the furniture belongs to him. Rather than sit in silence, Merlin would be very happy if music were playing, especially anything bouncy.
He knows a large range of commands, though will need some help learning to take them seriously. His personal space is important to him and he should not be pet while he is lying down, though he will happily poke his nose into whatever you’re doing. He also does not like gentle touches since they tickle and feel uncomfortable. His favourite type of pet is scritchies on his lower back, behind his ears, or under his collar.
He can be food aggressive if he thinks it’s something really special and his owner should know never to pet him if he’s waiting for a really special treat. He likes to be fed in a separate room and to be given a special treat like a hot dog or a bit of chicken as a reward for fetching his bowl when he is done.

A note from his current owners:
We adore Merlin and we hope you will too. We have had to come to the difficult decision of rehoming him because the lack of space in our home, coupled with our need to take care of our other pets, mean we are simply unable to give him what he needs. There have been a couple of incidents where he has attacked a cat and was even reactive towards a human due to his frustration with not being given the space, attention, and time he needs. His behaviour has improved since building a playpen outside where he can play for an hour or two a day with our other dog, but this is not really enough for him. If you are willing to put in the time, we know Merlin could be a wonderful dog for the right person. If you think you might be that person, please let us know. We will happily be available for questions and would love to hear how Merlin is getting on from time to time, though we know not to intrude.
