Biography

Joly is a purebred Shiba Inu. He is an adorable friendly boy; full of energy and life! He is super smart and needs an environment that is both physically and mentally stimulating.

In the last 3+ years, Joly has had a mostly housebound existence with insufficient activity, due to the health of his human. As you can imagine, he’s frustrated, anxious, and bored. In that context he has developed some behavior issues, which are likely to improve when he has a more active lifestyle. He has some resource guarding behaviors, and has nipped.

Joly will need to be in a home with experienced Shiba owners. Characteristic of the breed, he has to be kept on leash at all times and great care must be given at all times to prevent escape.

Joly had a severe case of parvo as a puppy, and as a result he has to be kept on the food that has been found to work for him. He has a sensitive digestive system. He is also fearful about handling because of what he underwent while hospitalized and on a feeding tube for parvo when he was three months old.
His new person/people should be prepared to work with him with a trainer. If he could become comfortable with being muzzled it would make it easier to make progress on increasing his comfort with grooming and vet appointments.

Joly is house trained, and crate trained. He sleeps in his crate at night in the room with his human. He doesn’t do well crated if left alone. He had separation anxiety before the pandemic but made progress with training. Having gone 3+ years now without being left alone, he would need to be reintroduced to the training. He would do best with someone who is retired or works from home.

Joly is used to a yard with a 6ft wood fence and does not have a history of escaping. He will however, bolt out of an open door/gate, so proper precautions must be taken to keep him safe.

Although he will require some training and some adjustment time, he is a young dog with a happy, playful temperament who has received consistent love. There is every reason to believe he will be a wonderful pet for an experienced Shiba owner who can provide him with an active lifestyle and give him a lot of engaging time together. He loves interacting with his human, and he also loves play time with other active dogs. He needs to be able to run regularly in a well-secured yard. An off leash dog park is not appropriate for Joly, and he must not be let off-leash even on hiking trails.

Joly may do well in a home with another dog, depending on the dog.
